In the study of the intricate philosophical landscape of this hermetic lineage, where the concept of Ignorance is juxtaposed with the pursuit of knowledge and enlightenment. Through the lens of traditional doctrines and relationships, we navigate the complex dynamics between ignorance, knowledge, and the human condition. Our exploration reveals a nuanced understanding of Ignorance as a manifold entity, comprising simple and complex forms, which interact with other concepts such as the Theory of Rebirth, School of Life, and the Platonic tradition.

§ I

The Sin of Ignorance and the Pursuit of Knowledge

Central to this hermetic lineage is the notion of Ignorance as the sole sin, antithetical to the salvation offered by applied knowledge. This dichotomy sets the stage for a philosophical inquiry into the nature of ignorance and its relationship with enlightenment. The Theory of Rebirth, which posits that the spirit is an integral part of God, unfolding its latent powers through multiple earthly existences, serves as a counterpoint to Ignorance. This spiritual education, likened to a School of Life, demonstrates the significance of knowledge in the pursuit of perfection and reunion with God.

§ II

Simple and Complex Ignorance: A Platonic Distinction

The Platonic tradition, as embodied by The Platonists, recognizes two fundamental forms of ignorance: simple and complex. Simple Ignorance, characterized by a lack of knowledge or understanding, drives the soul to seek and acquire knowledge. In contrast, Complex Ignorance involves an awareness of one's own limitations and gaps in knowledge, which can lead to a sophistical rather than theosophical understanding. This distinction highlights the varied nature and severity of ignorance, offering a nuanced understanding beyond the surface-level absence of information.

§ III

The Interplay of Ignorance and Enlightenment

The sympathies among these principles in the Ignorance tradition reveal a complex interplay between Ignorance and enlightenment. The Theory of Rebirth, supported by the teachings in BOOKS, provides guidance and validation for the belief system, emphasizing the importance of knowledge in spiritual growth. Conversely, Ignorance encompasses both Simple and Complex Ignorance, with the latter being exemplified by Primitive Savages and Modern Civilization. The 20th Century, as a subset of Modern Civilization, exhibits Complex Ignorance by valuing material achievements while neglecting the cosmic scale.

§ IV

The Consequences of Ignorance: Despair, Ambition, and Greed

The consequences of Ignorance are far-reaching, leading to a Self-Satisfied State, characterized by unawareness and a lack of philosophical awakening. This state, in turn, gives rise to the Despair of Worldliness, a focus on superficial aspects of life. Ignorance can lead to a Travesty of Ambition, where ambition is distorted or false, resulting in a self-satisfied, ignorant state. The Cruel Clutches of Greed, when unchecked, also lead to a state of ignorance and materialism. Unfulfilled idealism can result in a Cold Tomb of Dead Idealism, a state of ignorance and lifelessness.
