Nzambi (also spelled Nzambi Mpungu or Nzambi a Mpungu) is a supreme deity in the traditional spiritual beliefs of the Bakongo people of Central Africa, particularly in the Congo region. He is regarded as the omnipotent, omniscient creator god and sovereign lord of the universe.
Nzambi is considered the source of all life, the origin of spiritual and material worlds. He exists beyond time and space but permeates all creation. Unlike lesser spirits or ancestors, Nzambi is not typically worshipped directly in daily rituals; instead, veneration tends to focus on ancestors and nature spirits (bakulu and simbi) who serve as intermediaries.
Nzambi is associated with cosmic order, justice, and balance. He governs the duality of existence—life and death, seen and unseen, physical and spiritual realms. The natural elements—earth, water, fire, and air—are viewed as manifestations of Nzambi’s presence.
In post-colonial and syncretic traditions, Nzambi has often been equated with the Christian God, especially in Afro-diasporic religions like Palo and Kimbanda, where his essence is maintained but expressed through new symbols.
Overall, Nzambi is a transcendent, universal force and the ultimate spiritual authority in Kongo cosmology.
